My child hates reading and avoids it completely. What actually helped yours?

A child who avoids reading is often avoiding failure, not stories. When every page is a fight, refusing is the sensible move. The way back is almost always books that are genuinely easy for now, very short sessions, and taking the performance pressure off, so reading stops feeling like a test they keep failing.

What turned it around for your family: letting them pick anything, comics and graphic novels, reading to a pet, taking turns by page, an audiobook alongside the print? And what backfired and made it worse?
