The first letter, a look at the picture, and a guess. Most struggling readers learn this shortcut because it works just well enough to hide the problem.

Guessing usually means sounding out is still hard work, so the shortcut wins. What helped your reader drop it: covering the pictures, building words with letter tiles, easier books, something else?
