How do you use volunteers and aides for reading practice without specialist training?

Extra adults want to help, and struggling readers need repetition. But without direction, a helper can drill the wrong things.

If you use volunteers, aides or older students for reading practice, what do you hand them to keep it on track: scripts, card decks, specific games, an app that carries the plan? What happened when you handed them nothing?
