Silent-e: teaching the first long-vowel pattern.
Silent-e is the pattern that makes a vowel say its name: cap becomes cape, hop becomes hope. It is the vowel-consonant-e syllable, the third of the six syllable types, and the first reliable long-vowel pattern a reader meets. Here is how to teach it so it holds.
Teach it as a contrast, not a new word.
The fastest way in is a pair the child already half-knows. Write cap, read it, then add the e: cape. Do it again with kit and kite, hop and hope. The child sees the same word change its vowel when the silent-e arrives. The rule they can say back to you: the e is silent, and it makes the vowel long.
Read and spell one vowel at a time.
Stay inside one vowel until it is secure. Read a whole set of a-e words (cake, gate, name), then i-e, then o-e, then u-e. Our free decodable word lists keep each of these on its own, so nothing outside the pattern sneaks in. When you dictate for spelling, ask where the silent-e goes and why.
Name the two jobs of the final e.
A reader who knows why a pattern works is steadier than one who memorised words. At this stage the final e has one job: it makes the vowel long. Later, the same e explains softer patterns and helps English words avoid ending in certain letters, so naming its job now pays off. Watch for the guess.
The common slip is reading cape as cap, the eye stopping before the e. Cover the word, reveal it whole, and have the child scan to the end before deciding the vowel. A quick daily check of five words tells you whether the pattern is set or still needs a day.
